Arizona State University to launch content creation degree

Arizona State University is set to enroll its first cohort of Content Creation majors this fall. Housed within the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the bachelor’s degree focuses on video and podcast production, audience analytics, and personal branding. As part of the curriculum, students must complete a capstone project that requires building a following on a chosen platform and demonstrating measurable growth.

This program follows a growing trend in higher education aimed at supporting the creator economy. Syracuse University opened the first academic center dedicated to this sector last September, and three other content creation degrees were launched in the fall of 2023.

The academic shift reflects the professionalization of the industry. Large-scale creator organizations, such as those led by MrBeast, operate with hundreds of employees in roles including production, engineering, finance, and marketing, functioning similarly to traditional mid-size media companies.
