Arizona sues TikTok over alleged risks to children

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has filed a lawsuit against TikTok in Maricopa County Superior Court, alleging violations of the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act. The state claims TikTok utilizes features such as endless scrolling, automatic video playback, and personalized recommendations to keep minors engaged for extended periods without adequately disclosing potential risks.

The complaint further alleges that TikTok’s safeguards are insufficient to protect young users from harmful content and that children under 13 continue to access the platform despite stated age restrictions. The lawsuit cites potential negative impacts on mental health, sleep, and body image, as well as gaps in protections against child exploitation.

This legal action occurs amid a broader debate regarding the safety of emerging technologies. While social media platforms face increasing scrutiny and settlements over user safety, advocates are now looking toward artificial intelligence, questioning whether regulators can implement preventative safety measures for AI before the full extent of its developmental risks for children is understood.
