Arizona toddler found alive in hospital morgue hours after being declared dead

An 18-month-old boy, Vincent Lorenzo Fiordilino, was discovered alive in a hospital morgue approximately five and a half hours after being pronounced dead at Mercy Gilbert Medical Center in Gilbert, Arizona. The incident occurred on February 8, following a near-drowning in the family's swimming pool during a Super Bowl Sunday gathering.

According to reports, Dr. Aryan Toosi pronounced the child dead at 6:20 p.m., reportedly stating that the child's pH levels were too acidic to sustain a quality of life. Despite family members and police officers noting signs of breathing, hospital staff dismissed these as agonal breathing. A medical examiner's transport team discovered the toddler was still breathing when they arrived to retrieve the body.

Vincent was subsequently transported to Phoenix Children's Hospital, where he was treated for severe brain damage, kidney, lung, and liver issues. He will require lifelong assistance due to significant neurological deficits.

The Gilbert Police Department has requested the Arizona Attorney General’s Office to review the case for possible felony child abuse charges against the doctor. While Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell previously announced that the child's parents would not face charges despite a police recommendation, the family's attorney, John Brewer, intends to file a lawsuit against the hospital and the physician.
