Arizona voters to decide on DEI funding and sports participation

On November 3, Arizona voters will decide on two significant propositions regarding state policy. Proposition 142 seeks to end taxpayer funding for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. If passed, it would prohibit state money from supporting DEI-related offices and prevent public institutions from requiring mandatory DEI training or statements regarding race relations. Supporters, including the Goldwater Institute, argue the measure aims to eliminate loopholes that allow for race-based policies in hiring and college admissions.

Proposition 318 focuses on athletic competition and privacy. The measure would expand existing state laws to require athletic associations to classify teams by biological sex, as recorded at birth. It would also prohibit biological males from using female locker rooms or bathrooms in athletic settings. Additionally, the proposition would extend the right to sue for lost athletic opportunities or retaliation from schools to include athletic associations.
