Arkansas River sewage spill prompts health warnings for hunters

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is advising waterfowl hunters to take precautions on the Arkansas River near Pueblo following a massive sewage spill in August. Approximately 4.25 million gallons of untreated sewage entered the river due to a failed pipeline patch.

Water quality testing has identified elevated levels of E. coli and other pathogens, such as viruses and parasites, at multiple locations downstream of the spill. While water quality has improved in certain areas, recent rainfall has been noted to wash residue into the streams, potentially increasing bacteria levels.

Officials warn that hunters face exposure risks when wading in shallow water, retrieving birds, or handling wet equipment. Recommended precautions include avoiding direct skin contact with the water, washing clothing and footwear separately, sanitizing gear, and practicing strict hygiene when handling and preparing harvested waterfowl.
