Arlinda Zekaj murder investigation reveals history of domestic violence pleas

Arlinda Zekaj repeatedly sought assistance from authorities regarding threats and violence prior to her death. Police, judicial, and prosecutorial documents indicate she had been reporting issues involving her husband, Jeton Sylaj, since at least mid-2026.

Zekaj and Sylaj were married for approximately 13 years, spending much of that time in the United States. Zekaj had reported experiencing psychological and physical abuse during their time in America. In 2024, Zekaj and her son returned to Kosovo, while Sylaj continued to work in the U.S.

The case involves ongoing disputes over child custody and shared assets. Zekaj's final plea for help was made only hours before she was allegedly killed with a machete, a crime suspected to have been committed by her husband's brother.
