Arlington National Cemetery removes critical text regarding Confederate memorial

The Trump administration has removed critical language from Arlington National Cemetery webpages and physical signage regarding a former Confederate memorial. Previously, the site included descriptions noting that the 32-foot bronze monument, unveiled in 1914, presented a “nostalgic, mythologized vision of the Confederacy” and contained “highly sanitized depictions of slavery.”

The monument, sculpted by Moses Ezekiel, was dismantled in December 2023 following a congressional mandate to remove Confederate symbols from Department of Defense property. Recent amendments to Department of Defense web pages have also removed context regarding racist tropes depicted in the statue, such as the “Lost Cause” narrative.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth previously characterized the statue as a “Reconciliation Monument” that was removed due to pressure from “woke lemmings.” An agreement has been reached with Virginia to display the statue at Arlington again by 2027, accompanied by interpretive content intended to provide historical context.
