Arm CEO predicts AI will find a cure for cancer in our lifetime
Rene Haas, CEO of Arm Holdings, has predicted that artificial intelligence will discover a cure for cancer within our lifetime. Speaking in a BBC interview, Haas noted that while modeling complex biological processes—such as how DNA markers are impacted by cancer—is currently too difficult for both humans and existing computers, advancing AI models and increased computing power will eventually solve these challenges.
Haas, a former board member of AstraZeneca, also highlighted that AI could significantly reduce the time required to develop and test new medical treatments. However, he warned that a global shortage of high-performance chips is currently acting as a bottleneck, slowing the deployment of AI infrastructure and the expansion of data centers.
Beyond healthcare, Haas predicted the widespread adoption of self-learning humanoid robots within the next five years, particularly in sectors like manufacturing, security, and construction. He expressed skepticism regarding the UK's ability to establish a major domestic semiconductor manufacturing industry, citing the immense costs and specialized resource requirements compared to existing global supply chains.
