Armand Achaibersing confirms candidacy for VHP chairmanship

Armand Achaibersing has officially confirmed his candidacy for the chairmanship of the Progressive Reform Party (VHP) in Suriname. His bid comes as the party undergoes a period of strategic reorientation following the loss of government power and the death of former President and party chairman Chandrikapersad Santokhi.

Achaibersing, who served as Minister of Finance and Planning from 2020 to September 2022, brings significant economic and administrative experience to the race. During his ministerial tenure, he played a key role in negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and worked on the country’s Crisis and Recovery Plan. His professional background also includes leadership roles in the insurance sector, having served as General Director at Assuria and chairman of the Surinamese Association of Insurance Companies.

While Achaibersing has secured broad support from various party factions, including former ministers and members of the National Assembly, the leadership contest raises questions regarding the specific skills required to unify the party. The VHP must hold its main board elections by May 2027, seeking a leader capable of managing diverse internal interests and redefining the party’s political position.
