Armed clashes erupt in Sajek during road blockade in Bangladesh

Armed clashes broke out between security forces and militants in the Ujo Bazar area of Sajek Union, Rangamati, on Thursday, October 22. The violence occurred while law enforcement agencies were attempting to clear a road blockade organized by the Sajek People's Rights Protection Committee and the Sajek Karbari Association.

The blockade, which began at 6:00 AM, involved burning tires and trees along the Sajek tourism road, halting all vehicle movement. To ensure safety, the military and police provided a special security escort to evacuate approximately 4,000 stranded tourists toward Baghaichhari. While clashes and pursuits were reported around 11:30 AM, no casualties have been confirmed.

The unrest has caused significant economic disruption. Due to the ongoing instability and a temporary ban on tourism in Sajek Valley, businesses have faced daily losses of approximately 10 million BDT, as many pre-bookings for the Durga Puja holiday period had to be canceled. Local authorities are working to normalize the situation, and the Rangamati Police Superintendent has called an emergency press conference to address the developments.
