Armed group abducts nine women and children in Central Papua

An armed group identified as TPNPB-OPM Kodap III Ndugama has abducted nine women and children from the Amungme tribe in the Jila Subdistrict of Mimika, Central Papua. The incident occurred following an attack on an Indonesian military post on August 17, 2026.

Reports indicate that the abduction resulted in the death of a mother who attempted to protect her child, and another woman was reportedly subjected to violence and thrown into a ravine. The victims include a pregnant teenager and several young students.

Lt. Col. Jozanda, commander of the 1710/Mimika Military District, described the actions as ‘inhumane’ and a violation of humanitarian principles. The Indonesian military and police are currently pursuing the group. Due to the trauma caused by the incident, local residents have ceased farming, prompting the military to coordinate with local government for helicopter food drops to address emerging food shortages.
