Somali pirates hijack cargo ship Lutuf off the coast

Armed pirates have hijacked the Lutuf, a Cameroon-flagged general cargo vessel, off the coast of Somalia. The incident occurred on August 17, 2026, approximately four nautical miles south of Mareeyo.

According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and the EU Maritime Security Center Indian Ocean (MSCIO), eight armed individuals boarded the ship and took control. While the status of the crew has been subject to varying reports, some maritime security monitors indicate the crew is currently safe.

The Lutuf is described as a 1,401-deadweight-ton vessel built in 1995. This hijacking marks a significant escalation in regional maritime crime, representing the fifth successful commercial vessel boarding in the area since April 2026. This resurgence follows a period of relative calm in the Horn of Africa.

At least four other merchant vessels, including the Honour 25, Sward, Eureka, and Asana, are reportedly still being held by pirate groups in the region. The increase in activity has prompted maritime security agencies to advise commercial vessels to exercise extreme caution when transiting near the Somali coastline.
