Armed group shifts and prison escape destabilize Colombian regions

The death of the ACSN leader known as alias Bendito Menor on September 4, 2026, has led to shifts in the control of territories in La Guajira. Following his death, the National Liberation Army (ELN) has reportedly begun to occupy spaces in the Alta Guajira, particularly near the Venezuelan border. While the ACSN maintains influence in subregions like Dibulla and Riohacha, the ELN is establishing a presence linked to cross-border business and drug trafficking toward the Caribbean.

In Santa Marta, security concerns have escalated following the escape of 41 detainees from a transient detention center. The escape occurred during the early hours of Monday, October 12, after a detainee requested medication, providing an opportunity for others to riot and flee. This incident follows unrest triggered by the death of another ACSN leader, alias Cholo. Authorities are currently searching for the fugitives, though eight individuals have already surrendered voluntarily.
