Armenia, Colombia avoids casualties in major 7.4 magnitude earthquake

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific coast of Colombia on Monday morning, causing widespread destruction and at least 285 deaths, with thousands more injured. While cities such as Cali reported at least 95 fatalities, and neighboring Pereira and Manizales recorded dozens of victims, the city of Armenia emerged largely unscathed.

Located approximately 70 kilometers from the epicenter, Armenia—a city of roughly 300,000 residents—reported no building collapses and no fatalities. This resilience is attributed to reconstruction efforts and rigorous disaster preparedness following a devastating 6.2 magnitude earthquake in 1999 that killed nearly 1,000 people in the same city.

Since that disaster, Armenia has conducted preparedness drills at least twice a year for nearly three decades. Residents utilized learned safety techniques during the recent tremors, contributing to the city’s ability to withstand the high-magnitude event without significant loss of life or infrastructure damage.
