Armenia expresses openness to electricity trade with Azerbaijan

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has expressed openness to electricity trade with neighboring countries, including Azerbaijan, as part of a broader energy strategy review. Pashinyan noted that growing energy demands, potentially driven by investments in the artificial intelligence sector, necessitate adjustments to the nation's energy framework. He emphasized a commitment to energy independence through the development of solar power plants and energy storage facilities, while remaining open to international trade.

Pashinyan confirmed that bilateral infrastructure discussions are underway, noting that Azerbaijani experts have conducted contacts in late 2025 and early 2026. He also expressed confidence that mutual goods trade between the two nations would occur in the near future. Regarding the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, Pashinyan stated that its operational lifespan is determined by existing international agreements.

This development follows a proposal from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to supply electricity to Armenia once the Metsamor plant ceases operations. The offer highlights a potential shift in regional energy dynamics, as Armenia seeks to secure long-term supply alternatives to its nuclear-dependent grid while navigating fragile diplomatic relations with Baku.
