Armenia navigates sovereignty and Russian military presence

Political discussions in Armenia are centering on the nation's sovereignty and its relationship with Russia. Garegin Misakyan, director of the Democratic Platform Foundation, characterized Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan as the first leader in independent Armenian history to defend the country's interests against colonial influences, despite noting that the values of the 2018 revolution have yet to be fully realized.

Concurrently, the presence of the Russian military base in Gyumri remains a point of contention. Political analyst Benjamin Matevosyan noted that while Russian President Vladimir Putin stated Russia has no desire to leave Armenia unless requested, the Armenian government's strategic programs show a significant reduction in the importance of Russia regarding national security and geopolitics.
