Armenia: Political analysis on elections, energy, and court rulings

Political analyst Armen Badalyan has stated that opposition participation in local self-government elections in Armenia is meaningless. He argues that local authorities in Armenia have historically lacked independence and remain dependent on the central government, which retains the power to remove community leaders at any time.

Regarding energy policy, former Deputy Minister Hakob Vardanyan discussed the potential integration of Armenia's energy system with Turkey and Azerbaijan. While Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has suggested such connections could provide transit income and market access, Vardanyan warned that connecting to the Turkish grid could risk domestic stability and require massive infrastructure investments due to Turkey's ENTSO-E membership.

In legal developments, National Assembly Vice President Aram Vardevanyan criticized the Constitutional Court for refusing to review an opposition petition regarding the government program. The opposition had claimed the program allowed state interference in the internal affairs of the Armenian Apostolic Church, but the Court declined to rule, treating the document as a purely political matter rather than a legal one.
