Armenia updates identity document laws and DNA exchange protocols
Armenia is implementing new regulations regarding identity documents. Under a law effective by November 1, 2026, citizens aged 16 and older will be required to possess an identification card. An identity card will be mandatory for those seeking a passport, which will now be valid for 10 years instead of 5. The identification card itself will have a 5-year validity period, a change from the previous 10-year term. Associated state fees are also set to increase, with the combined cost for both documents reaching 34,600 AMD for those without existing cards.
In a separate development, the National Security Service of Armenia confirmed the exchange of unidentified DNA profiles with Azerbaijan in January 2026. This exchange was part of a humanitarian cooperation effort regarding missing persons. The Armenian side compared the provided profiles against its own database, but no matches were found among the profiles of 50 individuals considered missing by Armenia. The service clarified that DNA profiles from the relatives of missing persons have not been transferred to the Azerbaijani side.
