Armenian Catholicos Karekin II faces criminal trial amid government feud

The head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Catholicos Karekin II, and six other senior clergymen have appeared in court to face criminal charges. The prosecution alleges that the religious leaders defied a court order to reinstate Bishop Gevorg Saroyan, who had been defrocked by the church in January.

During the initial hearing in Vagharshapat, the presiding judge, Hakob Manukyan, recused himself from the case, citing a potential conflict of interest. Defense attorney Ara Zograbjan welcomed the decision, describing the trial as a "shameful proceeding." The case has been reassigned to a new judge.

The legal battle reflects deep-seated tensions between the Armenian government, led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and the country's powerful church. While the state has accused church leaders of political meddling and acting as proxies for foreign interests, such as Russia, the clergy and opposition groups maintain that the prosecution is a politically motivated attempt to suppress religious autonomy and silence critics of the government.
