Armenian MP alleges Samvel Karapetyan arrest was politically motivated

Davit Ghazaryan, a member of the ‘Strong Armenia’ faction in the National Assembly, has alleged that the arrest of Samvel Karapetyan was intended to prevent a planned national unification meeting scheduled for November 5.

Ghazaryan stated that the authorities monitor the every move of opposition figures and suggested that Karapetyan’s detention was a response to political questions raised in Parliament regarding peace treaty conditions and Azerbaijani demands. Specifically, Ghazaryan claimed the government misled the public by failing to mention that Azerbaijan requires changes to the Armenian Constitution as a precondition for peace.

Furthermore, Ghazaryan criticized the court's decision to move Karapetyan to a correctional facility, calling it legally unsound given that he was under house arrest with electronic monitoring and constant police presence at his residence.
