Washington summit secures peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan
On 8 August 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump hosted a three‑way summit in Washington with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. The leaders signed a Joint Declaration and initialed a peace agreement that establishes interstate relations, recognising the mutual sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolable borders of both states. The text also foresees the opening of transport links, including the TRIPP corridor linking Naxçıvan with Armenia through Azerbaijani territory.
A year later, Armenian officials, including Prime Minister Pashinyan, say the conflict‑page is closed and peace is “visible and felt”, but the agreement still awaits formal signing, ratification and border delimitation. Analysts describe the Washington accords as a turning point for the South Caucasus, shaping its political and economic future and providing a framework for lasting regional cooperation.
