Turkey freezes assets of former minister Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya

Turkish prosecutors have ordered the freezing of all assets belonging to Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya, a former minister and senior official of the ruling AKP party, and her husband, İlyas Kaya. The action follows Kaya's recent resignation from her position as AKP deputy chair, where she stated she was taking “political responsibility” to allow for an impartial investigation.

The move is linked to a major financial scandal involving an investment fund scheme that officials have characterized as “Ponzi-like.” The collapse of these funds has reportedly affected over 455,000 individual investors. In response, regulators have placed seven companies, which managed 131 investment funds, into liquidation.

The main opposition party, Yeni Parti, has accused Kaya and her husband of using insider information to profit from the crisis. Specifically, they allege the couple invested 63 million lira ($1.3 million) in April and sold their shares in September for a profit of approximately 1.3 billion lira ($26.5 million). The opposition further claims the couple's combined profit from these activities reached roughly 2.2 billion lira ($45 million). Kaya has denied any wrongdoing.
