Armidale demographics to be updated in upcoming 2026 Census
As the 2026 Census is being conducted across Australian households, upcoming results are expected to provide a new demographic snapshot of Armidale. Data from the 2021 Census indicated that the city possesses a younger, more highly educated, and more culturally diverse profile than many regional centers.
In 2021, Armidale had a population of 23,967 with a median age of 36, which was lower than the New South Wales median of 39. The city also featured a significant young adult population, with 17.3 per cent of residents aged 15 to 24, compared to 11.8 per cent statewide.
The influence of the University of New England remains a key factor. In 2021, higher education was the city's largest individual employment industry, accounting for 10.3 per cent of employed residents aged 15 and over. Additionally, 28.7 per cent of residents aged 15 and over held a bachelor degree or higher, exceeding the New South Wales average of 27.8 per cent.
