Armidale Regional Council releases New England Rail Trail master plan

Armidale Regional Council has unanimously voted to release over 2,000 pages of documentation regarding the proposed New England Rail Trail. The released materials include environmental assessments and a master plan for a 65km section of the trail connecting Armidale to Ben Lomond.

Cr Paul Gaddes stated that the documentation demonstrates the project is a credible and deliverable regional initiative. The public files cover the project's future vision, the business case for investment, the concept proposal, and the council's current readiness for delivery.

Chief Planning Officer Daniel Boyce noted that the council is in early discussions with an assessment team to determine if the plans align with the New South Wales government's Rail Trail Framework. A formal decision on this qualification is expected by February 2027. If approved, the council anticipates completing leases and construction licenses by late 2027.
