Armin Laschet supports EU negotiator for Ukraine talks

Armin Laschet, chairman of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee, has voiced support for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s proposal to appoint a single EU negotiator for talks regarding the Russian war in Ukraine.

In an interview with the Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, Laschet stated that Meloni’s proposal addresses the current fragmentation and lack of clarity in European foreign policy. He expressed hope that a European envoy would be appointed with the specific mandate to represent the European Union in discussions with both Ukraine and Russia.

Meloni previously addressed her proposal in a letter to European Council President António Costa. She argued that the current approach, characterized by overlapping and inconsistent initiatives, hinders Europe's ability to work with partners and end the aggression.
