Armón Shipyard launches world's first 100% electric offshore wind vessel

The Armón shipyard in Vigo, Spain, has launched the ‘Staffordshire’, the world’s first 100% electric commissioning service operation vessel (eCSOV) designed for the offshore wind industry. Built for the British company Bibby Marine, the nearly 90-meter vessel represents a significant advancement in sustainable maritime technology.

The ship features a 100% electric propulsion system, though it includes dual engines capable of using fuel oil and methanol to mitigate environmental impact. It is designed to provide technical services to offshore wind farms and can operate for more than 24 hours on electric power alone. The vessel has a capacity for 120 people and includes 500 square meters of cargo deck space.

Bibby Marine Group CEO Jonathan Lewis described the launch as a “game-changing step towards cleaner, smarter, and more efficient offshore operations.” The project marks the first vessel of its kind constructed in Galicia, positioning the region at the forefront of Europe’s green offshore sector.
