Armínio Fraga warns of 2024 recession and 2027 socio‑economic crisis in Brazil

In an interview with Veja on 24 April, former central‑bank governor Armínio Fraga predicted a probable recession for Brazil in 2024 and a broader socio‑economic catastrophe by 2027. He likened himself to the “Dr. Doom” label originally applied to economist Nouriel Roubini, saying the outlook should prompt Brazilians to preserve cash and avoid new borrowing.

Fraga, who now heads Gávea Investimentos, criticised the government’s fiscal approach, arguing that austerity measures have raised public spending from one‑quarter to one‑third of GDP over the past four decades. He said the fiscal framework introduced by the current administration “chuted the pau da barraca,” leading to the high interest‑rate environment that he associates with the looming crisis. He also drew parallels with the fiscal excesses of the Dilma Rousseff government.

His comments are intended to pressure the Ministry of Finance for additional spending cuts and to signal a defensive stance to investors, reinforcing expectations of sustained high rates and a cautious market outlook.
