Army Foundation College sexual misconduct scandal prompts investigations

Four female trainees at the Army Foundation College (AFC) in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, have reported sexual assault and harassment, including an alleged gang rape when they were 17. The victims described forced sexual acts, inappropriate comments, and a culture of misogyny within the training centre.

Ministry of Defence data show 176 complaints of inappropriate sexual behaviour at AFC between January 2018 and June 2025, with 32 against permanent staff and 144 against junior soldiers. North Yorkshire Police recorded 16 reports of sexual offences in the year to June 2025, ranging from exposure to assault. Several adult instructors have already been convicted.

The British Army called the reports "extremely distressing and serious" and said such conduct has no place in the forces. It urged victims and witnesses to come forward and highlighted recent policy steps, including the creation of the independent Defence Serious Crime Command to support victims through the justice process.
