Four former female recruits have told the BBC that they were sexually assaulted while training at the Army Foundation College (AFC) in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, when they were 17. One survivor described a gang rape by several junior soldiers that lasted for hours, and the other three reported various forms of sexual harassment and assault.

Ministry of Defence data show that 176 complaints of inappropriate sexual behaviour were recorded at the college between January 2018 and June 2025. Of these, 32 involved permanent staff and 144 involved junior soldiers. North Yorkshire Police received 16 reports of sexual offences linked to the AFC in the year to June 2025. The college currently trains 889 junior soldiers, including 70 female recruits.

The British Army described the reports as “extremely distressing and serious” and said “unacceptable and criminal behaviour has absolutely no place in our Armed Forces.” Former MPs Sarah Atherton and Emma Lewell, among others, have called for an independent inquiry to restore public confidence and ensure safeguarding at the institution.
