Nicaraguan Army marks 47th anniversary and backs constitutional reforms

The Nicaraguan Army celebrated its 47th anniversary on September 2, 2026, with a central ceremony attended by high-ranking officials, including Copresident Rosario Murillo. During the event, General Julio César Avilés Castillo, Commander-in-Chief of the Military Forces, reaffirmed the institution's support for recent constitutional reforms, linking the military's stance to the defense of national sovereignty and independence against foreign interference.

General Avilés characterized Nicaragua as the safest country in the region, citing the absence of gangs, cartels, and terrorist cells. He highlighted the military's role in drug interdiction, noting that between September 2025 and September 2026, the army seized 1,381 kg of drugs.

Copresident Rosario Murillo emphasized that peace is a priority for Nicaraguan families to facilitate social and infrastructure development. The ceremony also included military promotions, with 200 officers, including 22 women, receiving new ranks. The anniversary celebrations in Managua caused significant traffic congestion due to road closures and ongoing infrastructure projects in the capital.
