Basque political leaders debate tactical pact for autonomy reform
Arnaldo Otegi, Secretary General of EH Bildu, has proposed a 'tactical pact' between different political forces to advance toward a Basque Republic and increase regional autonomy. During a political conference in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Otegi argued for a common horizon to counter the rise of the far-right, suggesting that expanding self-governance in social, economic, and political spheres is a necessary defense against authoritarianism.
This proposal aligns with ongoing, discreet negotiations between EH Bildu, the PNV, and the PSE-EE regarding a reform of the Basque Statute of Autonomy. While EH Bildu views a new Statute as a tactical step toward independence, the PNV and PSE-EE focus on institutional reform and the right to decide. The negotiations aim to establish a framework for greater decision-making capabilities within the Basque Country.
PNV President Aitor Esteban has responded critically to Otegi’s rhetoric, questioning the sudden search for common values and disputing EH Bildu’s claim to the political legacy of José Antonio Aguirre, the first Lehendakari. Esteban emphasized that while the PNV will participate loyally in upcoming budget negotiations, the political landscape remains tense regarding the future of the current legislature and regional governance.
