Netherlands commemorates 82 years since Operation Market Garden
Communities across the Netherlands are holding various ceremonies to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of Operation Market Garden. These events honor the soldiers and civilians who were affected by the airborne landings and subsequent fighting in September 1944.
In Ede, approximately 50,000 people gathered at the Ginkelse Heide for commemorations and aerial demonstrations. Despite challenging wind conditions, a mass drop of parachutists was successfully executed. In Arnhem, the ‘Bridge to Liberation’ event focused on the theme of flight and displacement, featuring live performances and ceremonies at the Eusebiuskerk and the Airborne Monument.
Other regional commemorations took place in Beek, where the 21st TSC of the US Army Europe honored the fallen, and in Eerde, where the Airborne Committee held ceremonies at the Geronimo monument. In Doornenburg, residents gathered to remember the 1944 bombardment that devastated the village. These collective efforts aim to preserve the history of the liberation and connect new generations to the sacrifices made during the Second World War.
