Arnold Zurkinden, 98, maintains independent alpine lifestyle
Arnold Zurkinden, a 98-year-old Swiss farmer from the canton of Fribourg, continues to spend his summers in the alpine pastures. Despite his age, Zurkinden remains largely independent, managing his daily tasks without the need for glasses or walking aids.
Since his retirement 33 years ago, the trained farmer has maintained his mountain tradition. While his family expresses increasing concern for his safety—noting that he can no longer stay entirely alone on the alp—Zurkinden remains active, having performed manual repairs on a hut as recently as last year. He notes, “I can still manage a few hours in the stable, but then I lack the strength.”
When not in the mountains, the widower lives independently in his farmhouse in Galteren near Tafers. He manages his household, cooks, and drives himself. Zurkinden attributes his satisfaction in old age to contributing to life, maintaining a good sense of humor, and avoiding negativity.
