Aroostook County wind farm project approved by Maine regulators

Maine regulators have approved a massive 800-megawatt wind farm project in Aroostook County, which is expected to be the largest renewable energy project in the state's history. The project includes the construction of a 111-mile transmission line to carry energy to the New England grid.

Avangrid, the parent company of Central Maine Power, recently won a bid to build a 1,200 MW transmission line associated with the development. While the project is subject to potential federal review, officials suggest it could save Maine consumers hundreds of millions of dollars over its lifespan. Approximately three-quarters of the generated energy will remain in Maine, with the rest distributed to the broader New England region.

Governor Janet Mills stated that the development aims to provide more affordable and reliable power, strengthen the electrical grid, and create thousands of jobs in rural communities. The initiative follows the 2021 Northern Maine Renewable Energy Development Program, which directed regulators to seek clean power opportunities and transmission infrastructure in the region.
