Arrest in Celtic Gold Theft Spurs Museum Security Overhaul in France

A golden Celtic artifact, part of the Vix Treasure, was stolen from the museum in Châtillon‑sur‑Seine, Côte‑d’Or, on 24 July 2026. The theft involved a half‑kilogram gold collar that symbolised power among ancient Celts and Gauls. Authorities say the robbery was carried out by an organised group despite reinforced security measures after two earlier break‑in attempts.

A suspect has now been arrested in connection with the theft, though his identity and motives remain confidential. Prosecutor Olivier Caracotch opened a band‑organized‑crime investigation and transferred the case to the specialised inter‑regional jurisdiction of the Nancy prosecutor’s office. In response, French officials announced a national security plan to strengthen protection of cultural heritage in museums, including upgraded technology, staff training and public awareness campaigns.
