Arroio do Sal Pitbull Attack Kills 66-Year-Old Woman

On Saturday, 1 May, a 66‑year‑old woman was fatally attacked by a pitbull in the Quatro Lagos neighbourhood of Arroio do Sal, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. She was attempting to feed the dog, which belonged to her nephew who was working in Santa Catarina at the time. The animal bit her on the neck and arms; emergency services arrived but declared her dead at the scene.

The victim’s daughter, who has a disability, was present but was not injured. Police and the local environmental patrol (Patram) secured the pitbull, which was restrained on a chain and taken for administrative custody. A police inquiry was opened by Deputy Adriano Koehler Pinto of the Arroio do Sal Police Department, with a necropsy ordered to determine the exact cause of death. The nephew, the dog’s owner, said he will return to Arroio do Sal to present himself to authorities.
