Arrow attacks on Canadian geese at Kemnader Lake, Germany

In recent weeks, several Canadian geese have been shot with arrows at Kemnader Lake near Bochum, Germany. Police reports confirm five birds were injured, with arrows recovered from their bodies. Investigators are analysing the projectiles to determine whether a crossbow or another weapon was used and are pursuing possible breaches of animal‑welfare and weapons laws.

Animal‑rights group PETA has announced a €1,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of those responsible. The organization urges witnesses to contact authorities and stresses the need for a non‑lethal "goose management" approach, arguing that hunting the birds is ineffective and that habitat modifications could deter future attacks.

Local volunteers and veterinarians have treated the injured geese, releasing some back into the wild while a severely wounded bird was euthanised.
