Arsenal and Barcelona vie for Atletico Madrid's striker Julian Alvarez
Premier League club Arsenal are intensifying their pursuit of Argentine striker Julian Alvarez, who is under contract with Atletico Madrid. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta sees Alvarez as a key target to strengthen the team for a title defence, acknowledging that the Spanish side is asking well over £100 million, a fee that would break Arsenal’s transfer record.
Barcelona have also submitted a time‑limited offer for Alvarez, warning that it will not remain open indefinitely. Atletico Madrid have signalled reluctance to sell to a direct rival and have already turned down a large bid from Real Madrid. Both English and Spanish clubs will need to meet Atletico’s valuation for the 26‑year‑old, who impressed at the World Cup and scored 49 goals in his first two seasons in Spain.
Arsenal are simultaneously working on a deal for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães, indicating a broader recruitment drive ahead of the next season.
