Arsenal confirmed that centre‑back William Saliba, 25, will be sidelined for an extended period after a back injury sustained during France’s 2026 World Cup semi‑final against Spain. The French international was forced off after 30 minutes and also missed the subsequent third‑place playoff.

Medical reviews in London concluded that surgery is not required, but Saliba must begin a managed rehabilitation programme. The club said his recovery will start immediately and that he is expected to be out for several months, ruling him out of the Community Shield on Aug 16 and the Premier League opener against Coventry City on Aug 21.

The injury is described as a significant blow to Arsenal’s title‑defence plans. The Gunners are already being linked with potential short‑term replacements, notably free‑agent John Stones and Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, as they look to shore up a defence that lost a key player ahead of the new season.
