The 23‑year‑old, who signed a ten‑year contract with Athletic last summer, carries a release clause estimated at €90 million (£77 million). Despite a season hampered by injuries, Williams made 32 appearances for the La Liga side and contributed 13 goals and assists, and he featured for Spain in the World Cup, providing the assist for Ferran Torres' winning goal in the final against Argentina.

Arsenal’s pursuit follows recent squad changes, including the departure of Leandro Trossard to Beşiktaş and the possible exit of Gabriel Martinelli. The club may need to sell players to free up budget and wage space, as Williams’ weekly wages are reported at around £282,000, higher than current Arsenal salaries. Athletic Bilbao could be motivated to negotiate a sale as they miss out on European competition.
