Arsenal signs nine youth scholars, four of Nigerian descent, for 2026‑27 season
Arsenal announced its 2026‑27 academy intake, confirming nine players have signed two‑year scholarship contracts. Four of the scholars – Hakeem Abubakar, Emerson Nwaneri, Theo Odaji‑Ukueku and Jayden Oba – are of Nigerian descent. The remaining scholars are Elyon Mbala, Daniel McCarron, Angelinou Pedro, Charlie Purdy and Joshua Sesay.
The contracts, required for players under the age of 17 under Premier League rules, were signed at a ceremony at the Emirates Stadium. Emerson Nwaneri, the younger brother of Arsenal prodigy Ethan Nwaneri, also reportedly has a pre‑agreement for a future professional contract. All nine scholars will join the club’s Under‑18 squad, with the possibility of registration as Under‑21 players for the senior Premier League roster.
The intake reflects Arsenal’s continued investment in its youth development programme and highlights the growing contribution of players with Nigerian heritage to English football.
