Arsenal to challenge Pro Ref over Sunderland penalty decision

Arsenal is set to lodge a formal complaint with the refereeing body, Pro Ref, following a controversial penalty decision during their 2-0 Premier League victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

In the 55th minute, referee John Brooks awarded a penalty to Sunderland after ruling that Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa held Dan Ballard. Although VAR reviewed the incident and confirmed the decision, replays suggested Ballard may have initiated the contact by pulling Konsa. Sunderland's Enzo Le Fée failed to convert the spot-kick, which was saved by David Raya, before Arsenal secured the win with goals from Bruno Guimaraes and Bukayo Saka.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed significant frustration, describing the decision as “unacceptable at this level” and stating that such errors could impact the course of the championship. The club intends to seek clarity regarding the interpretation of the challenge rather than attempting to change the match result.

Separately, Arsenal is preparing for a Carabao Cup third-round fixture against Ipswich Town, following a perfect start to the season across all competitions.
