Arson arrest in Goiânia; shelter fire in Corumbá adds to Brazil blaze

On 12 April, a 50‑year‑old man set fire to a car parked inside a semi‑new car dealership garage in Goiânia, Goiás, after the owner refused to transfer the vehicle to his name. Police arrested the suspect on 21 May, presenting security‑camera footage that shows him pour gasoline from a canister and ignite the car. The blaze threatened adjacent properties; the vehicle was seized and the man faces up to six years in prison for intentional arson.

Later that night, an abandoned house used as a shelter for people in vulnerable situations caught fire in the central district of Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul. Firefighters deployed approximately 200 L of water to extinguish flames that consumed clothing, cardboard, recyclables and old furniture. No occupants were found inside and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.
