Art Briles reveals near-hire as Texas head coach in 2014
Former Baylor head coach Art Briles revealed that he had reached an agreement to become the head coach for the University of Texas following the resignation of Mack Brown in 2014. Briles stated that a six-year contract was prepared for finalization in Phoenix, contingent upon Baylor’s performance in the Fiesta Bowl.
Briles noted that he would have left Baylor ‘100 percent’ had the Bears won their matchup against UCF. Instead, Baylor lost the game 52-40, leading Briles to remain in Waco. Texas eventually hired Charlie Strong, who served three seasons with a 16-21 record, before the program moved on to other leadership.
Briles remained at Baylor until his dismissal in 2016 following a university investigation into the handling of sexual assault allegations. After coaching stints in Italy and high school football, Briles has returned to college football as the head coach for the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds.
