Art collectors transition from galleries to museums

The contemporary art system has grown in complexity since World War II, characterized by increased hybridity among institutions and professionals. While many art market players exist, few gallery owners have successfully transitioned into creating enduring museum institutions.

Three notable examples of this transition include Ernst Beyeler, Helga de Alvear, and Yvon Lambert. These collectors shared a long-term vision of gathering fundamental artistic testimonies to serve the public.

Ernst Beyeler, who founded Galerie Beyeler in Basel in 1945, was a key figure in the internationalization of Art Basel. His selective collection of modernist and contemporary masterpieces led to the 1997 opening of the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, designed by Renzo Piano. Helga de Alvear, originally from Germany and based in Spain, founded her eponymous gallery in 1995, building a collection of over three thousand works spanning various artistic technologies.
