Art exhibitions honor Dominican and Mexican painters in France and Mexico
The Dominican Embassy in France has inaugurated the exhibition ‘Archipiélago improbable,’ a retrospective of the late artist José Castillo. Curated by Vivian Braga dos Santos, the exhibition features approximately 80 works across two floors, including painting, printmaking, photography, and video. Castillo, who moved from Santo Domingo to Paris in 1978, used his work to explore Dominican identity, religious syncretism, and the history of slavery and resistance.
In Mexico, the Museo Nacional de San Carlos is hosting ‘Luz Osorio: Memoria y afectos,’ the first retrospective dedicated to the Mexican painter Luz Osorio (1863–1935). The exhibition includes 20 works alongside documents and bibliographic materials from 12 private collections. The show highlights the challenges faced by female artists in the 19th century and showcases Osorio’s mastery of classical techniques, including oil paintings, landscapes, and studies of female models.
