Art exhibitions in Cetinje and Belgrade explore history and the human body
In Cetinje, Montenegro, the ‘Miodrag Dado Đurić’ gallery is hosting the exhibition ‘Sloboda je cilj’ (Freedom is the Goal). The exhibition explores various eras of Montenegrin history and the struggle for political and military freedom through documents and artworks. A central highlight is the first public appearance of a historical monument from 1861. The monument commemorated members of the Katunjani and Vasojevići groups who were killed by Ottoman forces after an expedition to Serbia was disarmed. Originally located near the Vlaška church, the monument was removed in 1897 during a visit by King Aleksandar Obrenović, with promises of a new location that were never fulfilled. A fragment of the original monument has been held in a museum since 1955.
In Belgrade, Serbia, the Museum of Contemporary Art has opened the exhibition ‘Mere tela’ (Body Measures) by artists Zorica Čolić and Tanja Juričan. The works examine how social rules, expectations, and value systems shape personal and bodily experiences. The exhibition critiques contemporary capitalism and the ways in which technology, medicine, and economic systems transform the human body, challenging societal norms regarding what constitutes a ‘healthy’ or ‘functional’ form.
