Art exhibitions use photography to highlight breast cancer experiences

Artistic exhibitions in the Dominican Republic and Spain are utilizing photography to raise awareness about the emotional and physical realities of breast cancer.

In the Dominican Republic, artist Vilma Cabrera has developed a work titled ‘The Silent Power of Grace’ as part of the ‘Bodies in Transit’ exhibition. Using a photographic archive she built during her cancer treatment starting in 2019, Cabrera combines images with textiles and objects, such as embroidered undergarments and dried branches, to represent the fragility and transformation experienced during recovery.

In Elche, Spain, the exhibition ‘Beyond the Skin’ is being hosted at the former Las Clarisas chapel. Organized by the Elche City Council and AMACMEC, the showcase features photographs by Nerea Pérez. The project aims to humanize the diagnosis by documenting the uncertainty, hope, and strength of women facing the disease, running through October 31.
