Art Gallery of Ontario hosts Impressionist revolution exhibition

The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) is hosting a new exhibition titled ‘The Impressionist Revolution: Monet to Matisse’. The exhibition explores the rise of Impressionism as a movement that challenged the dominance of state-run European academies.

By bypassing traditional institutions like the Paris Salon, the ‘Anonymous Society of Painters, Sculptors, Printmakers, Etc.’ established a new course for modern art. The collection highlights the shift from static studio compositions toward depictions of everyday life and fleeting light, featuring works by Claude Monet. The exhibition also notes how technological advancements, such as the invention of the collapsible tin paint tube by John Goffe Rand, enabled artists to work outdoors through plein air painting.
