Art historian Ljiljana Kolešnik passes away

Ljiljana Kolešnik (1959–2024), a prominent Croatian art historian and emerita scientist at the Institute for Art History in Zagreb, has passed away following a short and serious illness.

Regarded as a pioneer of modern art history in Croatia, Kolešnik focused her research on post-war modern art, visual culture, and the social and ideological contexts of art in Central and Southeast Europe during the 1950s and 1960s. Her work frequently explored the intersection of art, cultural politics, and gender studies, including feminist art criticism.

In addition to her academic research, she contributed to the field of digital art history through data visualization and network analysis. Kolešnik held various academic positions, including teaching at universities in Split and Zadar, and served on the Committee for Ethics in Science and Higher Education in Croatia. She edited several significant professional publications regarding Croatian art criticism and the relationship between socialism and modernity.
