Art restoration projects completed for historical works in Dresden and Florence

Recent restoration efforts have successfully revitalized significant historical artworks in Germany and Italy.

In Dresden, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister completed a delicate restoration of the ‘Madonna di San Sebastiano’ by Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio. Painted around 1524 for the Confraternity of San Sebastiano in Modena, the work underwent a complex conservation process that allowed for the recovery of its original light and figure definition. Due to the fragility of the panel, the project included a temporary conservation study open to the public to observe the meticulous technical phases.

In Florence, the Fondazione Santa Maria Nuova announced the restoration of a 17th-century oil painting, ‘Madonna con Bambino’, attributed to the circle of Francesco Curradi. Funded by a private donation from Marina Brière, the intervention addressed issues caused by aged varnish and previous 20th-century repairs. The restoration, led by Marina Vincenti, improved the painting’s luminosity and addressed damage to the canvas and gilded wooden frame. The work has been returned to the hospital’s museum path.
